On Friday September 28th a 7.5 earthquake and subsequent 6 meter high tsunami caused major damage on Sulawesi island, Indonesia. The current death tolls are over 1,400 with further fatalities expected to be reported as authorities finally arrive in hard to reach communities.
The BGAV is working within a newly created structure among global Baptists known as the Baptist Forum for Aid and Development (BFAD). The BGAV is one of the “founding” members of this group which finds its roots within the Baptist World Alliance and BWAid.
Several conference calls have been held and plans are beginning to emerge as to how the Baptists in the region may respond. There is a fairly strong presence in the region which will find leadership through Rebana (Indonesian Baptist relief and development), Asia Baptist Pacific Aid and Australian Baptist Aid. We have worked with these groups in the past and they are trusted partners.
On Thursday, October 4th, the BGAV released $20,000 from the Mission Relief and Development Fund (in the WM2 portion of the budget)to assist in the relief efforts. The plan is to send $10,000 immediately and hold the remaining $10,000 until a plan for recovery is developed.
Further funding will be required and the opportunity for volunteers to assist in long term rebuild is likely. Contact Dean Miller for more information.
